The heat is steering Fort Lauderdale's holiday week
Hazy hot days, a hit-and-run charge, AI George Washington, and a Thursday night market.
The heat is steering Fort Lauderdale's holiday week
NBC6 forecasters expect hazy sunshine and lower- to mid-90s highs through the early part of the week, with isolated late-day storms Tuesday and storm chances folding back into the pattern by Wednesday. That heat is quietly rewriting where and when Fort Lauderdale gathers. The midday draw is air conditioning: History Fort Lauderdale's new interactive AI George Washington exhibit and the Art of Language summer show on East Sunrise both keep daytime hours you can spend out of the sun. The social calendar, meanwhile, is sliding past sundown: the Ladies Night Market at The Shorely starts at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, and the beach's newest dining option, Motek By The Sea at the W, is built around indoor and outdoor seating over the sand for cooler evening hours. If you are outside at midday, take the forecast seriously. Lock in the indoor and evening plans now, and save the open-air ones for after the sun drops. NBC6 South Florida forecast
A driver is charged in the hit-and-run that killed a retired Broward teacher
Shelley Lewis, 68, a retired Broward special education teacher who worked with children with autism for years, was killed in a Fort Lauderdale hit-and-run. NBC6 first reported that a bicyclist was hit by a dark vehicle around 6:40 a.m. Thursday and later died at Broward Health Medical Center; a follow-up report identified the victim as Lewis. Friends and family told NBC6 they were shocked by the loss and remembered her generosity. The suspected driver has since been charged, moving the case from an unresolved crash into the courts.
